Broadhurst & Whitaker
Cedar Cottage, Vancouver

The Broadhurst & Whitaker Block significant for it’s Edwardian-Era vernacular design is associated with the early growth and development of the Cedar Cottage neighborhood, once part of the municipality of South Vancouver. Built in 1910, this is one of the oldest mixed-commercial and residential buildings in the surrounding area, representing a small, but thriving village that flourished following the 1891 establishment of the interurban tram stop at 18th and Commercial Street with dozens of shops, a post office and two-story school, Lord Selkirk which still stands today. The booming economy of the early twentieth century prompted Charles Frederick Broadhurst and Frederick A. Whitaker to commission the construction of the Broadhurst & Whitaker Block. Real Estate Agents by trade they opened their office on the ground floor and operated in this location until 1921.

This revitalization and restoration has something for everyone: modern residences on top of local serving merchant shops. We’re reviving classic architectural and decorative details such as the original fir floors, exposed metal I-beams and tin ceilings. It’s a modern community anchored in a deep respect for the history and heritage of its site and surroundings.
